River Nidd

Hampsthwaite to Killinghall

Knaresborough Anglers’ have the fishing rights to a 3.5 mile long prime stretch of the River Nidd close to Harrogate on the edge of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. There is vehicle parking at both ends and mid-way along the beat on both banks.

The Club has fishing rights along the river Nidd starting at Hampsthwaite Bridge and running downstream to Killinghall Old Bridge. The stretch holds a good head of native brown trout and grayling.

It is easily wadable along the majority of the stretch giving good access to all pools and runs. The banks are tree lined for much of the stretch and most fishing is done from in-stream rather than from bank top.

Special Rules

The water is restricted to fly-only during the trout season. No trout less than 23cm in length is to be taken. The number of trout or grayling to be taken by any one member or guest in any one week is limited to two. Catch and release and the use of barbless flies is strongly encouraged.

Trotting with worm or maggot is permitted during the grayling season. Ground baiting with maggot is not permitted.

Hampswaite Bridge

As you leave the village, heading North, swing to the right just before crossing the bridge and there is parking for four vehicles in the field, close up to the side of the bridge. Please do not block the track as farm vehicles need regular access.

Waste Treatment Works

Access is best via Crag Lane, turning by the school in Killinghall. Maltkiln Lane access can be tricky if you meet oncoming vehicles as there are no passing places. Follow the lane down, passing various farms and buildings until you come to a metal gate, which is usually closed across the road. Pass through the gate and the Water Treatment Works will come into view on your right. Drive down towards the Works and park off the road on the right, by the wire fence. Cross into the field and walk down the side of the WTW to the river.

Killinghall Bridge – South Bank

Turn Right off the A61 at the end of the road bridge. Drive down and cross over the old stone bridge, parking on the right.

Killinghall Bridge – North Bank

Turn Left off the A61 at the end of the road bridge. The road bends down and right into a gated industrial complex known as HACS yard. The security gate into the complex is locked on an evening and at weekends. KAC Members can be issued with an electronic gate access card by contacting the Secretary, and paying a refundable deposit. Once through the gate, skirt around the complex and turn left over timber bridge (careful!) to follow a track along a disused railway line to where the river comes up from the right near an obvious parking area down left off the track. N.B. This track becomes rough in parts and it is recommended only for 4×4 vehicles with adequate clearance. Members are advised to check beforehand if they have any doubts.

The guidance below is always subject to the River Level. The maximum recommended wading depth is when the River Level is no greater than 0.4.

Anglers must use their own judgement as to when it is safe to wade. At lower river levels more points of access and crossings will be available. Need also to be aware that the river bottom can change significantly from one season to the next – for good and bad.
